First lines meme pinched from stunt_muppet and eponymous_rose

Post the first lines from your last twenty-five fics and see if there's a pattern (or something like that).

A quick progress report...

Since Christmas I have written *drum roll please*

26,858 words!!!

*does triumphant happy dance*

After the periodic drought of the last couple of years, that's a great achievement, and I'm really happy. :)

Next installment of The Hand of Seth should be up either later today or tomorrow.

I want to know...

...why Lucie Miller is still not listed as a character on the Teaspoon. Martha's entire family is there, but no Lucie!

Wish my muse would return from wherever it seems to have taken up permanent residence.

Hmm...

I've been wondering whether to start a fiction journal, so that (providing the muse sticks around!) those who aren't interested won't get their flist spammed by my fic.

Any thoughts?

Eep! Been tagged by iansmomesq!

Thanks, Jenn! The best five fics I wrote? This is going to be difficult...

OK, in no particular order:

Strangers In The Night (2003) Doctor Who - Eighth Doctor/Charley, crossover with Buffy.
I'm not sure where the idea for this came from, as I was over my Buffy phase by then. I don't write many crossovers, but the image of the immortal and cursed Angel conversing with the thousand-year-old champion of life, the Eighth Doctor, appealed to me. Plus I wanted the excuse to have the Doctor wear a trilby. I have these strange impulses sometimes. I like the setting of the railway station, and the darkness and the steam. It's atmospheric. Well, I think so, anyway.

Mistaken Identity and its sequels (2004) Eighth Doctor/Charley
Started life as a one-shot, with India Fisher running into the Doctor in the middle of a Big Finish recording. Someone encouraged me (bad move), and it grew from there. It was a lot of fun to write, and fictionalising India and PMG was worryingly easy. I've been told that people can hear four distinct voices when they read it, so I must have done something right! The most enjoyable of my completed stories to write. I'm still getting reviews asking when I'm going to finish Fandemonium...

Chaos Manor (2004) Eighth Doctor/Charley
One of my few attempts at a traditional Doctor Who format, with its immediate predecessor, The Fog. I like this one because the theme park is based on one of my favourite places, and also because it features my beloved Brigadier. I really love writing the Brig. :) I don't find devising monsters easy, though, and this is one of only about three of my stories that feature original monsters. It also features a brief appearance from the Ninth Doctor, who hadn't started his tenure yet. And given my opinion of Eccleston, it's something that won't happen again!

Uncharted Territory (2005) Hornblower - Bush/Anna Maitland
Second in my AU Hornblower series, and I think the better written of the two completed stories. I was getting a better handle on the characters by this point, though I have noticed that Anna changed from my original characterisation at the start of Stormy Waters as I became clearer about her background. I'm pleased that I managed to steer it in vaguely the direction I'd intended, and that the scenes I'd envisaged in my head for months did make it into the finished article, even if some of them were a pig to write! I don't write outlines - I usually have a vague idea of a few plot points and an ending, but that's all. Writing in installments really helps, and gives me the impetus to keep going when I get feedback. I wish I could get absorbed in Buried Truth as I did with this - writing that one's becoming like pulling teeth...

Close Quarters/The Secret Diary of Phylida Mason (2005) Hornblower
I don't write humour very often - it appears in my fiction but is rarely the impetus. These two (the latter being written solely for laughs) are about the only two deliberately humorous fics I've written. Getting inside Mrs Mason's head was an experience, and I've been told I captured her well, which is actually quite a scary thought! Expanding the conflict between Bush and Cotard was great fun. :)

Actually, I like all the stuff I've written and posted online - if I didn't I would never have let it out into the open. I'm already having second thoughts about some of my choices...
